It’s been 9 years since we opened our doors- since then, a lot has changed. OGs have left and new G’s have carved out their own little piece of the “box” but one thing has stayed constant- where we come from, why we started and most of all, who we are!
Known by many names, J grew up competitively swimming. He ultimately swam for UT and qualified for Olympic trials. His knack for being in the water (amongst many other things!) is what ultimately set him down the path to become a part of a very small search and rescue special operations career field: Pararescueman (PJ) for the Air Force.
Stationed in Tucson, AZ – Jeremy served for 5 years, with 2 deployments to Afghanistan, during some of the most hostile years of combat. While in the military, Jeremy began developing his skills for programming, around the rigorous training the PJs used to stay at their Elite level of fitness – CrossFit! …only, heavier… hence our strength bias!
While stationed in Tucson, Jeremy Met Abby.
Abby: (written by me, so here comes 1st person!)
I grew up playing Volleyball, although not a natural born athlete, hard work ethic ultimately played in my fitness favor. I attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, earning my degree in Business Management & Entrepreneurship. When we met J & I were both at a crossroads, deciding what to do post-military/college life, which is when the brain child of a fitness facility arose.
After analyzing the affiliate finder map, we THOUGHT the Arizona CrossFit market was saturated (boy were we SO wrong), we liked each other enough…. so we packed up our shit and drove across the country, closer to Jeremy’s parents, to see what we could muster up.
After a few failed attempts at partnerships and corporate fitness jobs, we ventured out – SOF WODs was born. Military prep training for those looking to follow in J’s footsteps and bag a SpecOps job. Interest in our strength bias programming began to grow a following in Charlotte and ultimately we expanded to brand under the CrossFit name.
One gym, two gym, three gym… KIDS (Kinder, now 5 and Wyatt, now 3)! Fire department! A move! BoxPro magazine Cover!
The growth shifted our focus and we saw we were spread a little thin, so: We decided to put our love where it was best utilized; our first home box, South Charlotte CrossFit, our new hometown box – Beer City CrossFit, and our family. We sold Rocky Top CrossFit – and here we are!
All in all, we want you to know that your membership at our gyms is supporting a couple who worked hard to get here- and continues to work hard to get YOU to YOUR fitness goals, so, thank you. For your support over the years, OGs and new Gs alike 🙌🏼💕💪🏻
